Dr Balaji Gupta

Doctor Details

I grew up in Kansas City, Missouri and even as early as the second grade, I wanted to be a surgeon. My Chicago roots began when I entered the combined medical program at Northwestern University. As a medical student, I was drawn to eye surgery. I think it was related to my hobby as a photographer. I even had a darkroom in high school. Becoming an eye doctor was a natural fit.

After completing my residency in Ophthalmic Surgery at the University of Illinois, I proudly served as a Major in the United States Air Force at Scott AFB in southern Illinois. It was an honor to perform surgery on pilots, retirees, and dependents. Afterwards, I had additional training in eye muscle surgery and pediatric eye disease at the University of Michigan. This led me to an assistant professorship at the Eye and Ear Infirmary at the University of Illinois in Chicago. Teaching student doctors brings its own rewards. For many years, I also served as part time faculty at the University of Chicago as well as Loyola University.

I am currently the president of the Illinois Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons and an active member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Association of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus. My past honors include National Merit Scholar, AOA medical school academic society, Senior Resident of the Year for ophthalmology, and the Golden Apple Award for best teacher.
