Dr. Bruhl completed medical school and a surgical internship in the Texas Medical Center, finishing in the top quartile of his class, and being awarded the Outstanding Senior Medical Student in Surgery. Upon finishing his internship he was awarded the Outstanding Surgical Intern. While in medical school, he enrolled in pilot training, gaining a private pilot license, then upon completing his surgical internship, spent two years in the military on flight status as a flight surgeon. Over the ensuing years following his discharge, he gained Multiengine, Instrument and Commercial Pilot ratings and more recently the Airframe & Powerplant Mechanics license. His log book now registers over 48 years of incident free flying.

A fascination with the science of vision and the precision and esthetics of eye surgery, drove his decision to seek ophthalmology specialty training and he was fortunate to be accepted to a top tier residency program. During residency training he was responsible for initiating a new residency program enabling subsequent UCLA residents to rotate to a training hospital in a foreign country, initially Honduras, wherein the residents obtained significant additional surgical experience.

Returning to his home state of Texas in 1973, he joined Ophthalmology Associates, becoming the fourth member of the group and later served as its president for over a decade. While in private practice he enjoyed teaching appointments as Associate Clinical Professor at John Peter Smith Hospital - Southwestern Medical School and served as the Medical Director of the Lions Organ & Eye Bank for over ten years, and on the Board of Directors of the Lighthouse for The Blind for four years. Because of his surgical experience, he was asked to serve as a Principle U.S. Investigator for FDA certification of certain lens implants, including the first Multifocal Lens Implant in 1989. He was among the very first to introduce this advancement in lens implant technology to Fort Worth. Additionally he was appointed as the U.S. Clinical Monitor for the FDA clinical trials for certification of the Zeiss YAG Laser. He has often appeared on the Annual National List of Best Doctors in America and has been granted two U.S. patents for surgical devices. Professional memberships have included the American Academy of Ophthalmology and other state and national organizations. He is a founding member of, and past examiner for the American College of Eye Surgeons, and a founding member of the American Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgery.

Desirous of improving both the patient and physician experience surrounding certain surgical procedures, Dr. Bruhl, serving as co-founder and President, was principally responsible, along with approximately twenty fellow physicians, for developing Fort Worth’s first multispecialty outpatient surgery clinic, the Fort Worth Surgery Center. This successful facility, along with two other similar facilities, served as the foundation for what became a large national outpatient surgery company listed on the NYSE, Surgical Care Affiliates. He served on its board of directors for eleven years ending in 1996. He also served on the board of Akorn Pharmaceuticals, listed on NASDAQ from 1983 to 2003 and been a co-founder of other successful private healthcare related companies.

On a personal note, at age 16 in Houston, he first met his wife to be, Pamela when she moved from Graham, Texas to the house next door; ten years later she said yes, and they now enjoy a son and daughter and four grandchildren, and of course good flying weather, especially to Santa Fe.
