Doctor Details
Dr. Atkins was born in Missouri and educated at the University of Iowa. He interned in Portland, Oregon, and then was drafted into the military and became a Navy flight surgeon in the Vietnam conflict.

Dr. Atkins completed his residency in Ophthalmology at the University of Texas, studying under Dr. E. Ferguson, who headed the retina program at the University of Iowa. He then came to San Francisco to work with Dr. Dohrmann Pischel, the great West Coast pioneer in retinal surgery. He worked with Dr. Pischel until the latter’s retirement. He joined Pacific Eye Associates in 1995.

During the 1970s and 80s, Dr. Atkins served as Chair of California Pacific Medical Center’s Quality Assurance Committee for 12 years. That interest has continued, he now volunteers as a surveyor for the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Surgery, doing about 20 surveys a year. Dr. Atkins has practiced Ophthalmology in San Francisco for 40 years. Now semi-retired, he continues to do office practice.
